Mrs. E did some social and emotional work with us today.  Snack time reader, taking a risk!  First student to be awarded VIP!

Thanksgiving centers: the focus is beginning and ending sounds and building CVC words
Thank you TESPTO for the wonderful food and beautiful table-scape yesterday!  It feels good to be appreciated, thank you!

The room is changing, but the hallway looks the same.  Getting out our folders and snacks can still be challenging.  This made me LOL yesterday because the items were stacked neatly in the middle of the hallway and the child was telling me how happy they were to be so organized. LOL!
A new whale shelf is just the thing we needed to store and share our reading strategies!  I hope your children have shared what they know.  We added a new element to our room, the VIP table.  In order to achieve VIP status, a student must be a bucket-filler that exhibits model student behavior.  At the VIP table, the student gets to have their own storage whale container filled with quiet activities of play dough and jelly animals; scented crayons that work like magic, and keep their "just right" books with them for a week!

We are continuing to make helpful choices to be bucket fillers!  This is our classroom during our writing block.  We are working on Narrative Writing.  Yesterday, we wrote about a small moment in time... a nightmare we once had.  Calm music was playing in the background and the kids were uber focused.  I had to capture it with a photo.

“LIFE IS GOOD”- SIMPLICITY SUPERPOWER &

GLOBAL DAY OF DESIGN-MAY 2ND

The students had a blast celebrating Global Day of Design on May 2nd! For this day, the students had a chance to put their creative minds to the test and design and create away! In May, we launched our newest “Life is Good” Superpower of the month- Simplicity. Simplicity is something that sounds so natural and easy to understand, but it can be very difficult to achieve! By having the month of May dedicated to the superpower of simplicity, we are being very mindful of the ways that we can show what simple playing, learning, growing and creating is all about in first grade.

To launch the month of simplicity, all first graders had the opportunity to participate in a “Paper Bag Challenge”! This challenge included only 3 directions: 1. The goal is to make a simple kite of your very own design. 2. You must use the paper bag in some way. 3. You muse use 3 streamers and a piece of yarn. Anything else the students wanted to add to their design was up to them! ðŸ™‚

Just a snowy day...

It's the little things...catching snowflakes on our tongues

Snow...a glimpse of wonder

LOVE

The word love is used so often yet it can mean something different every time it's used:

I love you!
I love pizza!
I love school!

In first grade, we continue to celebrate the Life is Good Super Powers and this month's super power is love.

So, what does the word love actually mean?

love
ləv/
noun
  1. 1.
an intense feeling of deep affection.

"babies fill parents with intense feelings of love"

    synonyms:deep affection, fondnesstendernesswarmthattachmentendearment

  2. 2.
a person or thing that one loves.

"she was the love of his life"

synonyms:beloved, loved one, love of one's life, deardearest, dear one, darlingsweetheartsweetangelhoney

verb
  1. 1.
feel a deep attachment to (someone).

    "do you love me?"

synonyms:care very much for, feel deep affection for, hold very dear, adore, think the world of, be devoted to, dote on, idolizeworship

We read a lot of books about love especially for Valentine's Day and during our Fairy Tale unit. Here's a favorite we've read in class. Click on the book for a read aloud.

It was fun to celebrate together at our Valentine's Day party. Watching the children pass out Valentine's to each other is so sweet and never gets old!

So remember how powerful love is and to make sure to tell someone or perform an act of love today!

Reading Strategies

using strategies in a creative way to read
The kids are learning to make inferences. When making an inference, they use what they know and what the text says, to make a conclusion or guess about what's happening in the story.  I reinforced "finger pointing" that was introduced in the beginning of the year.   "Wicked" pointy fingers were needed to get the job done.

A royal retelling of the story
In writing, the students are learning the elements of a story include: setting, characters, problem, solution, and events: beginning, middle, & ending.

Finsihed pieces of retelling sashes, crowns, and necklaces.
